Plastic is Not the Only Problem pt.2

Updated: Dec 30, 2022

When you go to any marine park ( ex. Sea World ) they buy dolphins who were captured by fishermen and forced to train them to do tricks. The fishermen are very selective of the dolphins and if they see one that won't do good they kill them. "But why kill the dolphins that aren’t selected for captivity" - Tamara Arenovich ( Sea shepherd conservation society ). That was my question too, the reason for dolphins being captured and then killed is because of pest control. The fishermen see the dolphins as competition. They feel like they eat too many fish, and they think if they get rid of the dolphins they will have more fish. The dolphins are being blamed for overfishing.

In southern Japan Kii - katsuura, there is a fishing port there, but not just any fishing port. A tuna industry, and it's one of the largest tuna imports in the world. They were catching Bluefin tuna, the most expensive fish on the planet. Just one of these fish sold in one of Tokyo's fish markets, for over 3 million dollars. These fish are very endangered, less than 3% of these fish remain in the wild. The excuse for killing dolphins, for the crime of eating too many fish was a lie. In reality, they were killing dolphins as an escape route for overfishing. That way, they can keep participating in the multibillion-dollar tuna industry, and cover all the ecological responsibilities.

Not only high-priced fish were being captured in that fishing port, but also sharks. They slice up their fins and then sell fins. So sharks all around the world are being killed for their fins, and then made for shark fin soup. After being sliced up for their fins they toss the shark into the ocean as if it never happened.

Sharks are being captured by fishermen and their fins are being cut off for shark soup. Hong Kong is also known as a shark fin city because they are known for the largest shark fin imports. 73 million sharks die each year because of us. Honestly, people are afraid of having sharks in our ocean, when they should be afraid of not having them in our ocean. Sharks help keep our ocean healthy, they keep the fish population under control.

Without sharks, our ocean falls apart. Around the world, the average amount of humans dying from sharks is 10 humans per year, while we humans kill 11,000 to 30,000 sharks per hour. Half of these sharks are killed by bycatch and thrown back into the ocean. Bycatch is all the other marine life caught while trying to catch a target species, and at least 50 million sharks were caught this way.

People say that eating fish is just as bad as eating shark fins because shark fins are strictly held in Asia, while fish is eaten all over the world. What do you think? Should we continue eating fish?
